You are entitled for bereavement leave for up to 7 days. No you don’t need to submit the death certificate. HR is just on a power trip.

Need to understand one thing - No one will release from the project or long leave without proper reason. In this case he is saying personal loss and asking for a break. What’s the harm in sharing the docs and take break, come back fresh.

For privacy reasons & out of respect I guess you can blur particular details. But still it sounds harsh.

You can take 7 days of bereavement leave. Pls reach out to your HR’s manager if he/she is asking a proof for leaves within these number of days
