You will be promoted if you pass the exam. But this also depends on the upcoming hike cycle and manager as well. I gave my exam in Feb, and got promoted in the September cycle.
Not sure what happened in the six months between.

And later in the December cycle I got the least bonus in my whole team, when I questioned my manager asking who else worked better, he simply responded you were promoted in the September cycle, you got a hike already, so least bonus.

I don't know how this works, but it involves a lot of internal politics.
