Transition to Data Engineer

I am having 5 years of IT Experience and have been working on an IBM product ( python and SQL).

In my current domain I am not able to get the package I am expecting, so I am thinking of switching my domain to the Data Engineering side.

Is it safe to switch? If anyone has done a career change like this in data engineering could you please share any courses/path you have followed.
