Tolerance and culture are not related. I think you have not lived in Gujarat as an outsider.
- Hooligans used to moral police at parks
- Non veg shops are attacked frequently. When the first KFC outlet came up in Ahmedabad, it was vandalised. It shut shop and came back after 3-4 years in a different location
- If you eat non veg, it’s very hard to find a place to live. If you’re not a hindu, good luck getting a decent place to live in
Having said that I was able to make long lasting friends in Gujarat and often visit them with bottles of liquor ;)
Only Muslims have some problem in finding housing in Gujarat, Sikh, Christian & Jain people are plenty here and peacefully existing. Non veg is not a problem, there are many people who sell and consume non veg food,
I'm myself a non gujju living in Ahmedabad for more than a decade, I've neighbors here who are non Hindu.
And nowadays the moral policing not done, for example at riverfront park nibba nibbi freely doing PDA, they're not disturbed by anyone.
Your experience might be old.
Just to quantify the non veg food point, just checked now there are 1260 outlets delivering food to my location out of which only 410 are pure veg else 850 outlets have some kind of non veg food offerings.
Misinformation needs to be tackled.

That should have been that. However, the Gujaratis refused to back down. The matter escalated to fisticuffs and one of the rudely woken and disgruntled-in-drowsiness residents alerted the police.
The cops rushed to the society and took a couple of the squabblers into custody, but even they acknowledged that everyone had the right to their own cuisine and no one could dictate terms to neighbours on this score.

I think it’s an evolution process of a city. Like what Bombay was 20 years ago, maybe. Lot of Marathi focus was there, same kind of vandalism, outsider-insider culture. Now, not so much. I think it’s a painful part of a city growing up. Full confidence that Bangalore will also evolve, but stupidity to continue for some more time and maybe intensify in the short term.

Good post. Everyone will evolve. This phase too shall pass and we'll be more welcoming very very soon. If not, the shift shall happen from blr to another city as it happened with Mumbai
