Thinking of leaving a 1 Cr job in India for the US. Am I being stupid?
Looking for honest perspectives on India vs USA
Quick background about me: I’m an MBA from a top IIM, currently earning close to 1 crore in India in a product and business role. I’m not from a tech background, but lately I’ve been wondering whether it is worth putting serious effort into exploring the US as a long term move.
I’m curious about two things:
-
Is it worth it for someone like me to consider the US? Given my profile (non-tech, business, product, growth), would the career upside, lifestyle and overall long term opportunities justify the switch?
-
Or is it a distraction? Is the opportunity cost in India today so high that trying to break into the US market makes little sense for someone already doing well here?
I’d especially love to hear from: • Folks who moved to the US recently in non-tech roles • Anyone who tried and didn’t find it worth it • People who lived in the US for years and then came back to India • Anyone who can compare long term career compounding in both countries
Open to all viewpoints. Please share your experience, the good and the bad. It will help me (and many others) think clearly about this.

Yes, you're being stupid.
But do it anyway. Life is not just about making safe, smart decisions.
Life is for having experiences. So make the stupid move, go to US, and experience the life there. You can come back whenever you want.
But that way you won't have the regrets later, of never having tried living in the US.
Good luck for your time in the USA! 👍

Good perspective, thanks.

You should try visiting USA first, see if you like it there or not. Can be unsettling for people in suburbs especially, not having community there sucks.

You being stupid tbh ..many people will yearn to be in your place..
There are other people who might give you better advice from a career perspective. So I won't touch on that. What I'd like you to consider (if you're not already doing that) , is how you'd cope living in the US? Mentally I mean.
