Tell me how to proceed ahead in this scenario?

Guys My manager tells me to come 5 days office and although my HR said it’s hybrid 3 days office policy. I travel 90 KM a day from Noida to Gurgaon each day for office and still he taunts me for this since last two months. I recently joined the company in June And I can not leave it this much soon because from last company I got laid off in 1.2 year and before that I left it in 10 months.

Why don't you take a PG near by the office for a year and then make a switch to a better company near your home?

Cause you can't expect everything going to be in your favour when your Manager is not at all supportive and understanding.

Don't mess with him unnecessarily when you know you can't leave this job soon as you are recently hired. Just stay near to office for a year.

Sir, how much I will pay, I have a home loan EMI and mu home in Noida, adding 10-15k more on it will be more for me and I joined this company only because it was hybrid I can travel 2-3 days a week which will be fine for me but I didn’t expect this behaviour from him, I need cooperation from him.

What did the HR say on this? You bluntly tell her that you joined because you trusted company policies that all 5 days WFO is not required.

If she also sides with the manager saying (nahi.. jo manager bolega vahi karna padega because Return to office is dependent completly on Manager's wish) then only two options you have:

  1. Switch again.
    Or
  2. Take a PG (6-7k max per month)- your travelling cost will become Zero so technically you will save atleast 2k there so actual expense would be 4k extra per month but more time will be saved and you will survive easily for another year. The moment 1 year is complete, take one good offer in a Noida based company and leave the PG and come back to your home.

I dont understand about such managers who create their own rules apart from the Company ones, in this case asking employees to be in Office extra than the required hybrid days.

This is nothing but an unethical method used by the manager to tell management how they accomplished to be able to bring 100% WFO attendance and thereby eligible for some gimmicky internal KPI fulfillment or worse change of hybrid to full WFO policies.

Sad state indeed.

Bro they are creep he lives hardly 10 Km away from office and comes 3-4 days a week and expects me to come 5 days a week. If I didn’t come on the same day when he is also on WFH then he asks IT team guys that am I in office or not ? And if they say that he is not in office then he expects me to give a reason that why I took WFH today ? What was the reason?

FluffyPotato

They are really piece of shif who wants to show that they are doing alot of work alone as a manager and their team is doing nothing whole day. This is all bullshit behaviour of them.

Be happy that all the hard work you do, the profits you help Airtel make, is helping Bharti ka beta blow up startups while sitting in USA and being called a hard working entrepreneur.

I guess you should go office daily, better do what manager says to make love easy. Manage whatever way you want. For long time try to switch and look for job which is permanent work from home which you might not get also. So get habitual of going office daily as all IT companies going to do this same. This is nothing special which we are doing. Everything doing this. So get use to it.

I don’t want a full remote job, I want a hybrid job where I definitely want to have some social interaction and also want to get information from office. But this hypothetical situation where he insists me to come to office 5 days a week and he can take WFH anytime whenever he wants, is something making concerning. He already knows I travel alot each day and when I gave him a scenario of reverse roles then he said I will never join this company if I would be at your place.

GroovyWaffle

Please don’t expect mercy from him. You should plan your stay near office as already mentioned. He should cooperate but when he is not doing then no use of fighting and impacting your performance. TCS and Infosys, if I’m not wrong they are calling 5 days office minimum 5 and hours in office respectively. Ask for release from him which he will not give. I’ve given complete freedom to my team come any one day office but if you can’t come every week then come alternate as report comes to me only. If any escalation no one will scold or ask to drop paper by also mentioned don’t take my name if any escalation happens but I don’t mind if you make a gap of 1 or 1 week. It should not be followed as granted but use wisely.

But I do agree with the reason.
It sounds immature.
I am not disagreeing it’s true. But they expect you to respect them.

I do respect them and doing this since last June. But at least my body needs a rest, I am not a robot I do have to do some rest and I am asking WFH once in two weeks because he can take it anytime but I can’t why is this ?

"Woke up late" this is really a stupid and kiddish reason. Seedha bolde - aaj nhi aayunga. That's still better and dignified.

FluffyPotato
FluffyPotato

When I say I can not join office then he ask me reasons explicitly and it has to be a valid reason that why you are taking WFH today.

You reason only when you want WFH once or twice a month. Not 2-3 times a week.

I can't talk to my manager like this even 😂... In your case seems like friends are talking...

FluffyPotato

😂I think he has mood swings either he talks in full English or he talks in this language. There is no middle ground for this guy. He tries to be so frank and then taunts like his male ego is so fragile.

The manager has the right to ask you to come if he/she thinks the team or their work will suffer and not get delivered and the system will support him. You also have to mature up - the screenshot reason seems so immature and this way you will be perceived as someone who can’t be depended upon for more challenges, opportunities or growth within the system. There is no entitlement - you knew it and you should have asked for in writing policy on paper. There is no excuse for you to write on grapevine. Instead - go to office, show your metal on the work, build trust, man up and talk to your manager in a few days once they start trusting you and eventually you will get your WFH once he/she knows work will not suffer and you can be trusted to deliver and not surprise them with yet another foolish reason like woke up late, needing rest. Trust me, I did this as well despite WFH to build trust when I joined a role and in month 1 to 3 and it gave me 2 years of peace thereafter.

What you write to him is all good and is very personal stuff and ok for juniors if that's your mindset. Also, your problem seems to be with your manager only as I can see a lot of personal comments about his language usage, his demeanor, how he travels vs you, etc.

Please add new skills, get damn good at your job, get a fuck you leverage on your resume next time you find yourself in this situation

FluffyPotato
FluffyPotato

I don’t think the work is suffering because the work is completed in advance i.e., the work which has to be completed by December is done by August.

I guest imo the reason is not immature, I need rest, I am travelling 44 KM on one go with travelling time of 2.5 hr and vice versa while returning.

And, I guess you didn’t know when it rains in Gurugram, then it takes me more than 5 hr on one side of travelling in Gurugram because everything just get blocked.

I am open to take challenges, I am open for new task, work and things but I need time to get it done, suppose if I take 4-5 days to complete one task while he says that it is so delayed as he can do that in 2 days easily.

i know he is intelligent and he knows things very well as he is in organisation since 5 years and carries 15 years of experience as well.

That’s how the company plays that they give this thing verbally about the company hybrid policy while now says that it all depends on management.

Idk man how he will trust me, because work is not the only parameter of trust, I will definitely show some metal and ask him for work and try to deliver it before time But still if he seems the same thing only than who will take responsibility of that, I know he is really a nice guy and all he wants me to grow technically alot but idk what is his love to call me office 5 days, still I am thinking to relocate to Gurugram but the rent is touching skies there for a flat and for PG its also way more.

I really appreciate your POV and definitely try to add new skills in resume to get a good job sooner ASAP.
