Tech Tsunami is coming

In 2016, there was wave of automation. Buzz was it will eat jobs. It did some. But generated more jobs in implementing, testing etc. & somehow IT jobs managed to survive.

In 2022, came gen Ai. Honestly, I too dismissed it as just another fancy tech, at that time. But as days pass by, seems that this time, it's different. AI is not just another wave. It is Tsunami. It will eat jobs. & The so called 'more jobs generation'? Well AI will do it.

There will be way brutal layoffs. If you are above 40, consider each day in job as bonus.

Manage your budgets thoughtfully. Avoid leakages or unwanted expenses. Save as much as you can. Invest it. Avoid flats in the metros though. If there are no IT jobs there, there will be less IT offices. With less hike each year, even rent growth will take a hit. Lands in rural & urban areas (excluding metros) will do far better.

New jobs will be generated in agriculture, food tech, defense, Electronics & MFG. Not at the scale of IT. But atleast they will have jobs. If you find a good GCC, get in. Along with tech, try to understand business side of it. No customer pays for fancy tech, they pay for business problem you will solve with that tech. Full stack is not limited to tech only. It will b about understanding the customer problems & guiding them abt the optimum tech usage too.
Soft skills like critical thinking, empathy etc. will help you to save your job.

Be prepared for an impact. This time it is far bigger & far more disastrous.

Maybe in the short term... but sooner or later when all the seniors leave, with no one left worthy of taking their positions, companies will realise that they're shooting themselves in the foot by not investing in training junior devs. Call me deluded, but that's how I'm seeing this.

Frankly gen AI is just another google. It can suggest stuffs but can’t solve real problems. Not sure if there is any other AI model which can understand the customer issues, go through the logs, troubleshoot/ do enhancements directly just by looking at the story description, test and deploy. But looking at chatgpt/copilot etc it doesn’t seem like they can replace the software developers. But it can just be kind of an assistant in the job.

Hopefully market will be better going forward.
