Tcs Research & its scope

Can anyone let me know or suggest how to get into TCS Research ( through RMG or some other means )? If someone is already there can you share the experience of being in it , how it's different from conventional client billable projects. Is this more into publication of research papers or patents ? In Bangalore or Chennai where these projects are specifically located.
