Yes even my friend did the same. He really choose mechanical with lots of interest, and got placed at Mahindra in manufacturing unit. But they placed him in supply chain after joining and he lost interest, he tried to do all sorts of things to keep up his interest in 2 rewards but was unable to because of the gap between expectations and reality in Indian mechanical companies. So he prepared for 4-5 months, did some problem solving, web development and put a resignation there. I referred him at my company as an intern. Despite of having resigned from a decent paying full time job, he didn't hesitate to join as an intern (even our juniors are working as full time here within the same team). It's been 4 months since he started as an intern and now he got full time within our team. So switching is possible and good if you are not working with interest , just be ready to give your 100% and believing in yourself is the key.
Here I would give some credits to my organisation as well for their support 😍

I switched from Civil to IT as a java developer
