Switching into a proper Data Engineer role?

Hi all, I'm current working in IBM as a Data Engineer (that's what shows up in profile but doing nothing related to that) with an experience of almost 1 year. I'm planning to switch in coming few months as my work here is not justifying the role they offered. I'm working as a Sr. Data analyst for the client but all I've been doing is documentation and validation for past 7 months. I'm afraid of losing the technical proficiency that I'm left with right now because of this. I have interest in data engineer role. Want an advice on how to start preparing so that I could start applying for this role in the coming 4-5 months. Thanks in advance!
