Sunday hustle: short story
I hate working on Sundays, but sometimes work demands it. Since we work with medical equipment of doctors and hospitals, it is mostly occupied on weekdays.
This request came from a tier 3 town nursing home 1.5 hours away from my hometown. The microscope was older than me (30+). Classic Japanese engineering that really stood the test of time. The building housing the nursing home itself was more than 100 years old.
We had an electrician with us who got to work on cleaning the incredibly dusty insides and fixing the circuit, while I cleaned the objectives, prism and eyepieces. Also installed a camera that would cast the microscope's field of view onto a monitor so doctor won't have to bend his spine every time to see the microscope through the eyepieces.
Helps reduce spondylitis and carpal tunnel/tennis elbows in doctors and pathologists who use microscope frequently.
The whole gig took us 5-6 hours in total, and the fee charged was more than 60k. It was a bit surprising since the doctor didn't even try to negotiate or haggle, I guess he's making enough money even in a small city.
Tier 2 and 3 cities have a lot of unexplored business opportunities that we're trying to unlock. Word of mouth works better here, can't reach someone online who doesn't even use their phone very often.
All in all, it was a good day. Definitely more interesting and productive than lounging at home on a usual Sunday. Also very rewarding to work with good doctors 😇
