Summer internship help

I am helping someone in my family for a summer internship. The candidate is 2nd yr student from a IIT in core branch, finding it hard to get one from campus process as branch is non-CS related but her interest lies in software.

Do referrals work in these cases? Also any good platforms to spot open campus opportunities?
