Sick of the status pings on Slack during outages? Try this.
I’ve spent 14 years in PM/Eng roles, and I’ve realized that 50% of outage stress isn't the bug. It's the manager/founder blowing up your DMs.
The reason they do it is because they don't have a "Steady Signal." I use two protocols to buy myself silence:
SIR (Situation, Impact, Request): Use this while hunting. "Checkout is down 50%. Web only. Need 20 mins of silence to rollback. Update at 11:15 PM."
SIEN (Status, Impact, ETA, Next): Use this once fixed. "Bad deploy found. No data loss. Recovery in 10 mins. Monitoring for 30 mins."
Setting a specific time for the next update is the only thing that actually stops them from pinging you.
I’m building a Voice Lab called Simul where you can practice these updates with an AI CEO and get feedback on your tone/brevity.
