Side projects will help you standout.

As much as I'd recommend it being a paid gig, even if it's unpaid; hell yes.

Makes world of a difference, as the experience puts you in a league apart compared to your peers.

It also opens connections that can help refer you in new companies they might join down the lane!

Depends on the person but I feel that part time jobs are ideal.
