I am not getting promoted, having this doubt does primary skills have to be the same as per as the current project work?

Not at all....my primary is Java but I work mainly on python. You just need to show exceptional performance in project. Than your manager will give you good reviews and recommend you for promotion.

You should be doing what's in ur primary skill otherwise change ur primary skill asap.

Nope. Infact, if your primary skillset doesn't align with maximum folks from your project, it gets you an easier promotion as there are very few to no resources at your level in competition
