Should I take roll off from project

I am an ASE and currently in a project which does not align with my career path. I want to become a devops engineer. Although there are aspects of DevOps in the project there is no visibility and we are operating as level 2 so no development access to the code base. Should I take a roll off. I am scared because people are talking about silent layoffs, A lot of workforce on the bench and what not. Any advice is welcome.
