If upvotes carries karma points, will downvote have negative karma? In that case, knowing human psychie, can we really think the downvote would be used appropriately. As of now, it’s just fine to have like button and anyone who doesn’t like - chooses not to interact.
When there is a downvote, just for the heck of it, a comment might get downvoted. Just like the vote and karma farming in other platforms. Too many moral blind spots and not sure if it will fetch the good. But, I also don’t know what is your monetisation plan so, ignore my opinion.
This is a long discussion to see the various aspects. But Mr.Scott - just a friendly sharing snippet (not advice) - I am a firm believer in autocracy as a leader at product and management decision making. Do what you want to do with full conviction.
Good points. Will really think on this. Don’t want downvotes to become a new substitute for bullying campaigns. That was always the reason we didn’t have it in the first place
Reddit stops impacting the Karma(in our case it would be grapes) after a certain number of downvotes. What I don't like about downvotes on posts atleast is that sometimes people who pose opposing views from what's considered mainstream get a lot of downvotes and may not appear on top posts even though the post might be something worthy of atleast looking at and pondering over. But yes, for other scenarios like spam, promotions, bullying, downvotes and low ranking makes sense. It's dual edge sword, hard to get right. You'll need a solid recommendation system which considers all these parameters.
