Short Term vs Long Term
Wanted to know everyone's opinion here on GV on short term vs long term bets in career.
Short Term Bets
- Frequent switches (~1 yr)
- High earnings in a short amount of time
- A new environment can be refreshing
- Lack of work relationships
- Lesser chances of building something substantial
Long term bets (mostly for people in startups)
- Stick with a company for ~ 6yrs
- Lower earning potential in the short term
- Being in the same environment might feel monotonous at times
- Huge upside if things work out later
- Build good work relationships
- Opportunity to build something meaningful
For the people going the short term route, is it because you didn't find the right opportunity to stick for the long term or is it purely to maximize your earnings? And for the long term folks, what makes you believe in the company you're working for? What do you think when your peers are earning 2-3x ?
Personally, I've been a long term person. I believe I'll earn enough 10 years down the line to not worry about money. And the company I'm working at is actually building something game changing where I get the opportunity to lead the tech team early in my career ( 3 yoe ). But I also want to understand what's the right time to move on to something else.
Please add more pointers people! 🙏
