Seeking Advice: Transitioning to Product Management
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice on moving into Product Management. My background isn’t in Computer Science - (B.Tech in EEE and I have an MBA in Operations and Strategy), and about 9 years of experience in Financial Services industry. My roles have changed a lot depending on the project, covering things like workforce management, process automation, KPI scorecards, and dashboarding. I feel like a generalist and don’t have a specific tech stack.
How realistic is it for someone like me to pivot into Product Management? Would I need to start from scratch or take a pay cut (I’m currently at 30+ LPA)? Is not having a niche or tech stack seen as a red flag in interviews?
Also, are there any courses or certifications that would actually help, or particular skills companies look for in PMs?
Would love to hear from anyone who’s made a similar switch or has experience hiring for these roles. Thanks!

Tbh there is lot of competition to become and survive as a PM. Already most will have a much better pedigree and profile then yours. look for strategy or supply chain roles

Put together the work you've done from a product perspective.
See the parts you've missed, or lack knowledge about. Learn from those.
Read a lot of your projects' PRDs.
Write PRDs on your own (don't have to wait for someone to ask you to)
Present them to ppl of influence who work on the project. Get a mentor.
Ask and take on additional work on the product side.
Then look for a role switch internally or externally.
Salary wise don't have to make any adjustments, as you're going to do the above organically.
