Seeking Advice on Roles and Progression
I have an MBA from a tier 2 college and started my career as a Management Trainee in the COO’s office. My early work involved driving a variety of operational efficiency initiatives - think cost reduction, savings, dashboards, KPIs, and scorecards. I was responsible for overseeing project execution and managing teams with specialized technical skills. However, my own role was intentionally broad: I was expected to be flexible, and handle a wide range of initiatives, rather than develop a deep technical or functional niche.
Recently, I joined consulting, where my focus is on process review and standardization recommendations. The work is similar to internal audit - again, quite non-technical and generalist in nature.
Despite having 8 years of experience, I’m feeling a bit lost about what kind of work I should focus on to build a stable, long-term career. I want to identify roles that align with my experience and interests, so I can pursue a clear career path rather than continuing to take on random roles. But I’m unsure what my area of expertise really is, or where my background would be considered solid and valuable.
Are there roles or career paths where a broad range of experience - like mine - is actually considered a core strength or relevant expertise? I might not be aware of these roles, and I wonder if my perception of being “just a generalist” is holding me back.
If such roles exist, what does the typical career progression look like for someone with my background?
If not, what kinds of jobs or pivots should I consider before my years of experience and salary expectations make it harder to switch? I worry that if I wait too long, potential employers might see me as too experienced (or expensive) but not specialized enough, which could mean having to take a pay cut.
