Seeking Advice: Is Switching from QA to APM Worth It?

Hello Community,

I’m currently working as a QA (Quality Assurance) professional, but I’ve been considering transitioning into the role of an Associate Product Manager (APM). I’m curious to hear from those who have made a similar shift or those with experience in both areas.

A few specific questions I have:

  1. What are the main skills or experiences I need to build to make a successful transition from QA to APM?
  2. How different is the day-to-day work in APM compared to QA?
  3. Do you think the experience in QA provides any advantage or disadvantages when transitioning to APM?
  4. What challenges did you face in making this switch, and how did you overcome them?
  5. Is the transition worth it in terms of career growth, job satisfaction, and salary potential?

I’m excited to hear your insights and personal experiences. Any advice or resources to help with this career shift would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

  1. For an APM, some must-have skills are stakeholder management, communication, writing, technical acumen and basic design principles.

  2. There isn't much overlap but APMs are expected to do anything and everything that developers, QAs and designers don't work on. This can involve demos, requirement gathering, analytics, etc.

  3. Knowing how a tech product is built is definitely a plus for a QA, especially if you're looking to move laterally in the same company/industry.

  4. I think the major difficulty is the lack of a structured learning path to becoming a PM. You will have to learn about different tools and technologies on the job itself. Plus most companies prefer someone with an MBA so it's a big struggle to get interviews.

  5. Definitely! There's a lot of scope for growth in terms of salaries and career opportunities. Job satisfaction however is subjective and mostly depends on the product you're working on or the company culture.

I hope this answers most of your queries, feel free to reach out if you need any more help. All the best!
