You need strong acumen for research (I mean you really gotta have that independent capability of coming out with original solutions to problems) with proven record or some experience in the domain you are planning to join. Every lab has usually it’s own set of domain expertise. Believe me, slowly the academic quality and competition among our scientists in R&I have become really good with most holding reputable PHDs, which is actually a thing of pride and encourages us to do more. Atleast a masters, if not from IITs or NITs would be good. Other factors depend on you YOE, and how well the senior members see you as part of their research group vis a vis things you bring to the table.

you need a PhD in a relevant field like computer science or engineering. also, having experience in research and development is crucial. make sure you have strong technical skills and a good track record.
