Yeah, it's not originally Indian. Similar dishes called 'Sambusa' or 'Sambosa' are found in other Middle Eastern & African cuisines, e.g. Ethiopian. The dish was brought to India by foreign traders around 14th or 15 century.
Also the filling, potatoes, is another new-world vegetable (along with tomatoes) from Americas that were introduced to India only within the last few centuries by foreign traders.
