Mental blocks aka FOMO did not exist then and back then show off was not deeply engraved. Social media might have multiple benefits but it definitely ruined the metrics of human happiness and satisfaction.
We seem to have a more lavish lifestyle - expensive movies, road trips, vacations, eating out and other weekend activities compared to our parents. While our parents did most of these things it was often cheap and wasn't as expensive as today.
Everyone has a different version of happiness and purpose, given their circumstances. Life is about that journey of figuring it out.
Nowadays the concept of family is broken
I have a different take to it which isn't sad.
As everyone else has been saying in comments, Older generations did not spend on other things like Cafes, vacations, dates and gadgets as we do. But they spent on housing, which was very basic. My parents bought a 2BHK which is too small, no amenities and very less furnishings. As I see it, housing took highest % of their life incomes.
But for us, we have diversified our spends that is hopefully making our life more fruitful. I think that is smart. That is making our lives a bit easier and convenient, a bit more relaxed, a bit more exciting.
What wallet allocation older generation followed might be best suited for their time. But for us, self bought housing might be very low in our priorities. So if we are making our lives better in 2024 by spending our our essentials but we are unable to carve out budgets for buying a house, we need not fret it.
