Not to mention, Even in India, when hospital know that you are claiming insurance they charge different rates. For a small local anesthetic surgery, which can be done in OPD, the doctor said it has to be one day admission, when he realized i have insurance. The charges would have been 30K. I went to another doctor, who did that in OPD and charged me 900.
when claims are processed thru insurance, they charge a higher rate. The western countries also mandate something called generics. India tried doing that, and has been met with fierce opposition from doctors.
