India never was secular for the majority of the last millennium. It was always a thin veil of false secularism marked by draconian laws favouring non-Indic religious communities and a monopoly over violence by these non-Indic communities leading to gargantuan atrocities on Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains for centuries. India was immensely more secular with just Indic religious communities.
