Query regarding US business travel
Hello all, I am going to the US for 10 days in May under B1 Visa. They are giving me 150 usd per diem allowance. In that 30 usd are for transport, 72 usd for accommodation and 48 usd is for food and other.
My question is, upon return, will they ask for the actuals? Or I am free to spend the entire 150 usd in my own way? I mean if I spend more on hotels and travel by Metro/bus then my transport cost will come down and maybe I can stay in a better hotel.
And what will happen if I cannot spend the entire transportation amount? Will they take back the balance amount?

Hi
There are different regulations..
you need to keep all bills.... If the amount you used is higher than you were given , you can claim it by giving bills... But if you don't spend the amount given in the first place to you.....you can keep the balance of whatever is remaining.... If you take advance or additional amount, you need to return whatever is extra

Let's say I spent 100 usd for hotel, 30 usd for food, 10 usd for transport = total 140 usd. It's still less than my per diem (150 usd) but it has exceeded my hotel quota of 72 usd. So am I allowed to claim those extra 28 usd for hotel ?

Yes....with bill

150 USD is very less man.... I think you should take some additional amount for worst case from the Approvers.. ask for additional advance 150 USD is very less....

Yes the hotels itself are costing 110 usd per day... Remaining 40 usd I need to use it for food and transport. Luckily the place has public bus service which costs only 2 usd each way.

So listen to me ...keep all bills and take photo of all bills as bills tend to soil or unreadable.. While coming back you need to settle additional amount taken....keep track of every penny you spend...I have been on Onsite opportunity also....So, giving this advice

No need to keep any bills. It's your allowance. Spend wisely, rest is yours to keep. No bill submission needed

Around 2013, I went to Germany in business visa for 15 days, they gave me 100 euros per day. Was able to find shared accommodation on prorate basis. Totally spent 600 and kept the remaining with me.

No actually they have given in extra to spending ...later they will start to cut from your salary..

Nobody will ask anything...that's your money.
