Query regarding probation

At a company , my friends probation period was extended by one month due to a temporary skill mismatch between my current capabilities and the project requirements.

So they had meeting and told we are extending your time for a month just because of your condition, but chances are low. So is this sure termination?

So what is this issue why they have done this?
