It's actually x= (-b +-√b^2-4ac)/2a where a,b,c are real numbers and a != 0.

@SpeedyConstellation Its the b^2-4ac that drives the root values to be real or imaginary, so b^2-4ac > 0 stands correct to identify real roots.
