Promotion without pay hike - normal at Siemens?

My friend works at Siemens PLM as a software engineer and has been with the company for 10 years. He recently got promoted to Senior Software Engineer, which is the highest engineering position at Siemens before moving into roles like Architect or Manager.

This promotion happened during the annual increment cycle, and he received a 10% hike. However, there was no additional salary increase specific to the new role, and he was told that any increment for the promotion would be applied next year.

Before the promotion, his salary was ₹32 LPA, and now it's ₹36 LPA (₹31 LPA base). There are no ESOPs as part of the compensation package nor did he have any ESOPs before this.

Is this standard practice for Siemens or similar companies? Should he negotiate further or wait for next year’s cycle?

Also he works in Devops and pipeline tooling. Does this compensation align with market standards?

Your friend should definitely negotiate further. It's not standard practice to promote without a pay hike specific to the new role. Siemens and similar companies should offer better compensation. Waiting for next year is not advisable.
