Actually working on a project in which 98% team members are people who speaks Tamil even in Scrum/Stand-up meeting they use to speak Tamil instaed of English , Including Project manager & Tech lead .

Is it normal , Can't we say to them to communicate in English .

Anyone can give any views about this ?

i see this as a sign of disrespect if people don’t speak for the other person to understand. i my team also sometimes they got back to speaking telugu.

I just play dumb

In your Team , people might use native language sometimes, but in our project they always talk in Tamil irrespective of other people are there who can't understand Tamil . Even if they are taking about us for reference they will talk in Tamil . Atleast when we're present they should talk in English .
Got faded from this team .

You need to interject in calls and let them know politely that you are not following the conversation and requesting them to switch to English. When you do that few times they will automatically realize their mistake. Forget infosys. I have client calls where clients start speaking in their native language!!! And I have to remind them. It’s not intentional manny times but natural for them to do so. But most folks change it moment you point out. Learning curve is steep.

You can politely ask them to speak in English and be positive with them.

Yes , But I heard somewhere that if I ask them to do so they will release us
That's why I'm backing.

Nope!! As long as your interjection is polite and maybe a bit humorous it will be taken in right spirit!! “ Guys I also want to know what’s happening !! Unable to follow your conversation!! Please teach me x as well!!! Till i learn x pls discuss in English so that I can also contribute !! “ . Your tone should be soft not offensive/frustrated/angry

I have felt it is much easier to do complex discussions in your native language to your colleagues who are from the same place DC, instead of speaking in English, which might not fully articulate what I am thinking/speaking. But that doesn't mean even if one person is there who is an alien to your native language and you should ignore and keep talking in your native language. If everyone is inclusive and expected to contribute to and understand the overall discussions and activities going on within the team, then you have the right to politely ask/request them to speak in English. Generally, if someone is failing to make someone understand something in English, then they fall back to their native language and discuss and resume the discussion in English once listener's understanding is correct. As my team spans across several DCs from North India to South India, all discussions/stand-up meetings are in English. It's your right to request them. I don't think anyone will still be talking in the same language even after requesting unless they intentionally want you out of the team. If that is the case, why should you be staying in the team itself as there is nothing wrong from your side?

Correctly pointed , I'm new to this team & 1 more member who is from north is there from starting but he/she doesn't dare to speak . The main thing is that while in stand-up we didn't get what is happening in project, what other guy is doing & many more things . That's why I was thinking to point this thing to stand up call in polite way .

“Sorry, can you repeat that again. I don’t understand Tamil”.

Repeat until cured.
