Possibility of working on some research projects in parallel to your software job

Currently I want to be a part of some research based on core CS or AI but i can’t quit my job as well

I heard you can be a part of research projects of IISC, IITs etc in parallel to your job or I should quit my job and join MTech then phd. Can you please share if you have any info about this
