All the ratings are pre-defined, upper management decides that how many will get A rating and how many will get B and all. Mantaining a ratio of the bands in teams and projects. if management has decided that your team will get only one A rating than the lead will be forced to give A rating to single member no matter how the other team members have performed. if lead has given good rating to everyone than managers can change that rating according to his requirements and orders from his upper managers. After listening to this logic of band distribution for appraisal in IT, I no longer believes on appraisal, the only thing I believe now is how much will I get after I switch.
