PIP then laid off, again laid off
I used to work in a start up in Bangalore, they overhired in 2022 and overpaid the freshers, more than the experienced engineers were getting paid. To fix this put 30% of workforce on pip, laid off 20% I was one of them. 2 months later, they did open layoffs, did it again in 2 months, and one of my friends there heard the founders cracking a laugh that even the investors wouldn't have expected us to do this so fast.
I joined another company, they lost the client I was hired for, and few more clients, I was told they will have to do layoffs and my name is in the list. So they asked me to resign and I refused by saying we'll consider a last working day, if I get an offer I'll resign otherwise anyway I'll have to be laid off and they agreed. This happened one month after I had joined this company ( also a startup ).
So, being laid off once was already a big enough punch of reality, with an education loan on my head. I joined another company and got laid off again. Tough shit.
I ended up getting an offer before my lwd. I am not from any IIT, I am not an exceptional engineer. I am very bad interviews, my resume usually doesn't get shortlisted.
Sheer volume of effort I put made the impact on me getting a job. Right now I am the best job of my career, with a better management.
Trying to say, it's a tough time. But you'll get through it.

This is genuinely concerning. I hope this gets better.

Got laid off last year in June, interviewed and got 3 offers. Joined one of them who said they have runway for 5-10 years so there won't be layoffs. They put me on PIP in April saying they are being forced to do so, even if my performance had not been that bad. Got through PIP, everything was fine till they laid me off in October. So, this was my second layoff in two years. Thanks for sharing your story. I started to think something is wrong with me, and I should have worked harder to be the top performer, but then I realise that this was inevitable, they basically were looking for people that they hired on inflated prices.

So not getting hired in inflated salary is the answer to avoid such layoffs in the future?

Can't say, there are different combinations when it comes to layoffs. Companies are happy to pay good comp when they are doing good. When they start losing clients/business, they try to reduce the workforce as much as possible.

Same thing happened with me π

I, along with the whole Global Marketing team was laid off due to "restructuring", last year. It was a tough time but I learnt the importance of having emergency fund. Got another job after 6 months via ex-manager's reference. However, would like to mention I applied for more than 500 jobs, and got ZERO interviews!!! Not even rejection emails!

Take time and find a stable company, not saying that stable Companies are great and they dont layoffs. Startups layoff bigger chunks. I survived 7 rounds and was laid off in 8th, in this duration I made myself stable made lot of changes which helped me in facing this uncertain.

Please elaborate bro

Took remote option, moved back to hometown, started saving more for the dark phase, started connecting with ex-colleagues on linkedin/call/whatsapp, worked on my interview skills and resume.

Wish you the best bro. I've been through one layoff this year and I still remember the pain I went through. I hope you get strength to walk through this tough time again. Just a tip, be in touch with your friends and family and don't hesitate from ranting to them if needed. They proved to be a really good source of positivity when I was at the lowest

I did this with support of my friends, family would've lost hope and would've asked me to prepare for government jobs.
