What exactly happens in PIP and when it has been imposed? Can anyone please clarify. Thanks.

Read the pip policy document in hrpolicy hub
Short answer is
Your manager will assign you some goals and monitor your performance for a period.
If satisfied, you will stay If not, you will be let go.
(In general if you are put in PIP, it is good to start attending interviews)
