Perplexity’s playing GTA - Grand Theft AI
Amazon's cloud division is investigating Perplexity AI for potential violation of scraping rules by accessing websites that had forbidden it to do so.
1/ Scraping Practices and Plagiarism: Perplexity AI appears to rely on content from scraped websites that had forbidden access through the Robots Exclusion Protocol, and has been accused of stealing articles and engaging in scraping abuse and plagiarism.
2/ Response and Investigation: Perplexity CEO initially denied allegations, but later stated that the IP address observed scraping websites was operated by a third-party company. Amazon's investigation is ongoing, and Perplexity claims to have made no changes to its operation in response to Amazon's concerns.
3/ AI Content Usage and Violations: If the allegations against Perplexity are true, the company may be violating principles for governing generative AI and potentially engaging in improper content usage.

Why do we care? It's not like Amazon and Google have not scrapped the entire web without giving any fucks to the rules.

We don’t need to care, we should know - in the end the consumers will always win 🙌🏼

By the existing rules of the Internet, this seems really bad but as a paying user of Perplexity literally since it came out, I can’t help but root for Perplexity to come out on top. It’s such a good implementation of the technology, but it’s also guilty of all the things mentioned. I literally never go to the actual website from where the material was sourced!

Can the paid version be used to have conversations like with chatgpt? Like does it make more sense to pay perplexity 20 bucks instead of 20 for chatgpt and 20 for Claude?

If you want to pay, pay perplexity and you can switch between whichever model you want to use!

So have others. Anyone who knows even a tiny bit knows this is rubbish. What's with the obvious baits on this app now?

Violating what principles?
