One of my colleagues received PIP in the last appraisal cycle. Manager depends it by saying it is strict guidelines from the top. He was tasked with some heavy assignments and a training from LEX. He obviously was not happy and decided to put up his papers. Upon confronting the manager with his decision, Manager reacted in a positive manner and offered him support in clearing these assignments. Along with this, he will be transferred to other project at will of my colleague. Lay-off after PIP is subjective to Managers.

Bro can you ask him if you can resign in middle of PIP?

Yes. If the manager feels the employee wasn’t really bad but was juts unlucky to be lowest in the pecking order he /she will help with easy tasks/certifications during PIP. If employee is billable resource again manager will try to retain by giving easy goals. PIP is not equivalent to firing. Last year in our group we had around 10 PIP , 3 resigned before taking PiP other 7 cleared PIP. Only the UP cases are the ones who get laid off.
