Paid open source course

Recently a YouTuber named Harkirat Singh launched his course in which he’ll be teaching how to contribute to open source with the aim of landing a remote job. The course is priced at ₹5999. Do you think this is justified/makes sense?

What kind of scam is this? Leave FOSS out of this crap. We already have a bad reputation after what Code with Clown did in Hacktoberfest 2020.

How is it even a course? Want to know how to contribute? Read the GitHub docs & CONTRIBUTING.md of the repo.

How do you get started? Choose any library/util/lang/framework you're interested in. Then, go through the docs & site. If you think you can fix any small stuff like simple typos or reword sentences, open an issue & then implement after discussion.

No need to read the repo code. Pick up any already merged PR & understand what's happening.

Look for issues with tag 'good 1st issue', if the issue isn't already assigned, volunteer yourself & discuss how to implement/fix.

Remember that maintainers are always helpful af & have been in your position before at one point in their life.

Then slowly move on more complex issues. You'll learn a lot but only do them if you are interested.

If you do well, you might get some sponsors and earn some $

Now how to get job in remote companies. Start contributing to stuff directly or indirectly related to that company's open-source projects. Connect with the maintainers (they usually have discord servers). Then you can start asking for referrals when you are comfortable enough. This is part of soft skills, so I'll leave that to you.

Now where is my 5999?

Well, don't know about your 5999 but you definitely have my thanks man!

Also, I agree with what you are saying with respect to charging for the course, but I do need help on this. I will be happy to sponsor some project of your choice if you are willing to guide me on this.

If your aim is to learn Git or GitHub then go for an udemy course or use the ocean of free materials available to learn. Avoid influencers or any social media guy trying to sell you their courses
