Trending @Wipro; Need your suggestion

Hi all , I m Scholar trainee in Wipro,I m in my 3rd year now and got onboarded to a testing project 3 months ago and started working.I' m interested to start my career as "developer" but they are asking me to work as automation tester in my current project and learn skills like Selenium,git,Jenkins,maven,REST api. Is automation testing a better option? Should I continue with automation testing or should I leave project and prepare for "developer" role ?
