Zomato: 85L including 15L stocks yearly 5 days office, 2hr+ commute Slightly better job security. High scale

US AI: 95L all fixed, stocks not discussed yet Fully remote Slight micro management, but manageable, 0 job security. Low scale, directly reporting to the CEO

I started from Java for a long time, recently have been picking up python as most AI frameworks and libs are primarily built in Python or typescript.
I would say, what helps is a good foundation of system design, solid backend understanding and also good communication.

Since you mentioned your long term goal is to have your own startup, I think going with the US AI startup would be a good move. It's fully remote so you'll have flexibility to do something on the side and since it's a startup, you'll also be gaining valuable startup experience.

Yes, but the founder is extremely toxic, he shouts on the face sometimes! And is an extreme micro manager.

It's for some reason dwindling my confidence

As someone who has worked at Zomato and currently works at small US based startup in remote job, don't join if the founder is toxic.

Z will also be toxic. No doubt. But it's a large public company as well. There are processed (kind of) and things are streamlined to an extent. You won't be a headless chicken.

To startup in future you’ll need high quality connections and good junior talent pool to poach from. Zomato is a better bet while also that job security will help you build more corpus and bigger safety net to start from. Leaving Zomato will be on your terms and would give you more insight into managing people and tech at scale and so much public exposure. Gen AI although exciting, can be cut short because of hype but people are not putting their money where their mouth is. Unless the startup you want to work on is also going to be gen AI, then the 2nd option might sound better. But Zomato has a lot of very exciting gen AI projects going on.
Decide well!

That's such a well thought out comment!
Yes, the team I have been selected for in Zomato is an AI native team, so I'm hoping to continue my learning there too, and was hired mainly because of my AI start up experience

Everyone here already pointed out the plus and negatives. I will provide a better perspective.

AI is all the rage right now, for a future career aspect it’s much better to go with the US AI startup. Zomato is already saturated in what it does and has set itself as a key player. The scope for disruption is limited.

If you were to start a startup in next few years, your network needs to be solid. Try to leverage them into asking you to come on-site. Setup your shop there in few years. If you want to stay in India and then build then there really is no point, then it depends on what lifestyle you want. Full remote gets depressing as well.

If startup is the ultimate goal… focus on networking and staying updated on what’s happening in market.
The truth is innovation starts in US and then when it matures, it comes to India for maintenance.

Ver rare for India startup to disrupt a market. Not impossible but you have to play the odds.

Take US startup, leverage them for on-site US then setup your own thing. I think 5 years is a reasonable bet.

That's a good pov. The only problem is the environment in the US startup is extremely toxic, and its founder has too many trust issues. Money is definitely good, but because it's remote, it's getting a little too lonely

Fully Remote anytime 😁, you will get Zomato later anyways.

God, no Zomato, never Zomato
US AI, unless it's a ChatGPT wrapper company, is always much better than Zomato

All Indian startups are generally terrible in terms of culture, Zomato or Eternal or whatever they call themselves is no different

WobblyTaco

It is definitely a chatGPT wrapper, they are building AI agents
