My Tech lead ust screamed at me like a literal psycho

Just got off a call 20 mins back where my manager started screaming at me like a maniac. And I mean literally shouting.

He went on an unhinged rant about how I’m not working 12 hours a day, how I lack hustle and how I will never amount to anything good in life without struggle. How because of AI we young devs of today have started taking it casually, and don't put in the hard work.

I am fuming rn

He is the biggest slacker i have ever seen. I push more features than him every single sprint. I am the one actually building the features and fixing prod issues while he takes 3 days to review a simple PR and logs off at 6 PM to go to gym. He hasn't struggled a day in his life since I joined.

This guy either had a massive fight with his gf or forgot to have lunch or whatever. He just had a miserable day and decided to use me as his personal punching bag to feel like a big man - for no good reason, when I haven't done anything.

It's sad that some people think that you can just punch down whenever you want, just because someone is your junior.

Feeling disheartened and genuinely instantly feel like shooting a strongly worded message to him.

Send out an email to the HR team Highlight this incident.

If there is any transcription or recording of the call, share that too

Better call it out rn. If you sweep it under the rug now, you’ll have to deal with bigger problems later

There is no HR team I can share with the founders, but the tech lead is very close, so i will end up making things worse for me

Not possible

Yes in startups better to get a work exposure and then leave...in such places leads support leads....not junior devs

If this happens often, then better to change the project by requesting to hr. If that's not possible then prepare yourself to explore opportunities at different organisations and exit from there.

That’s desperation at a new level. It’s not even a company.

Find another job, and when you leave tell the founders it’s because of him.

That's actually a good idea. If the op is a good resource, which I think he his. The founders will actually think about that guy as no matter how close a tech lead is to founders. Finding a good dev require business resources as well.

this sounds like a mixed signal, but one that shows up a lot for ust. the experience there seems to depend entirely on which project lottery you win, and you've clearly lost this round. that kind of rant isn't about your performance; it's a manager projecting their own insecurity onto you. a person at peace with their work doesn't need to scream about hustle.

Saying this from experience, he must have had fight with founders or his leads and grilled about slow speed of delivery of features. Currently due to AI adoption non hands on founders don’t have idea how much effort is needed and they just want to ship asap.

Usually this is management failure.
No need to feel bad if you have given 100% but take in positive way if there is chances of improvement. You can create a small presentation the delay is due to reviews getting delayed and keep it ready (with examples). As this is a startup,One or other day when topic comes up show it to whole team.

I’ve found that escalating issues in a corporate setting is a dead end. People either dismiss your concerns with vague assurances or pass the buck until the momentum dies, all while your reputation takes a hit for being the one who’s struggling.
Honestly, changing jobs feels like a total toss-up, finding a team with actual integrity feels like winning the lottery.

The first up title is super confusing. Had to read comments to get the context. Even I was about to give suggestions thinking you were referring to UST.

Anyway, focus on jumping, dude. It aint worth it. This mostly would be a start of many such instances. Alot of such people look for that one lackey in office to vent out of their frustration. Dont be that guy.

Pushback. As long as you take that crap they keep hurling hurtful comments. Let him know what a loser he is ..
