My manager has been a lifesaver

I just wanted to say it out in the open. A lot of your experience at TCS will stem from your manager. So while most of things you will hear are negative, just wanted to share a different insight

My first manager was not very nice. They would constantly make me work long hours, and they would want me to ping back within 1-2 mins for anything, and shout if I didn't. They were the typical micromanager.

On my 2nd project, things got better. My new manager:

  • Ensures we log out on time every day, unless it's an exception
  • Respects personal time: I personally have been studying for GRE. I was able to tell them, and they regularly check if I am getting time for prep and if I need help
  • Also helped in building confidence in the fact that I work well and correcting me

TBH if you see any of the above signs in your manager, just appreciate them. They are all people. Be clear with them. Help them help you. Mine did!

@Codex bad only happens for most of us. Mostly bad managers. We dont suddently wake up one morning and decide to be cynical. All of it comes from past experience

I can relate to the latter experience, my manager is relatively young and genuinely wants our team members to learn and grow professionally as well as personally. Although I'm not really interested in my current tech stack, and wish to change domains, I remain wary of sharing my true aspirations with them.
