My manager called me to work when I'm on Sick Leave

Just as the title mentions, my manager wants me to work when I'm on Sick Leave.

I have already emailed my manager on the 25th for a Sick Leave request. It was approved. Then I had to mail him again on 26th asking for a week long leave (until December 5th) as I was diagnosed with Typhoid. It was approved as well, so I moved back home with my family to recover. If you think it was easy to get it approved, it wasn't.

Now for context, I work in a project where I'm a Trainee and have to take calls and chats. When this project began, I was chosen as SME because of my technical expertise (as this isn't my first job) and now I'm regretting it every other day for the past 6 months.

I have asked for sick leaves before in November. And it was denied as I was the only SME logging in on Monday (when call flow is high). Fast forward to the last week of November and I got a fever again, but it was a brutal one.

It was so bad, that I requested leave again last Sunday, but it was rejected again stating the same reason. I somehow worked last Monday but after I came back home my body was hurting badly. Got myself diagnosed and it came out to be Typhoid.

Since last week, I have been on Sick Leave and recently came back to my hometown to live with my family to recover properly. But a few hours ago, I got a call from my colleague asking me if I could work tomorrow as she had met with an accident and the team only had 2 people left.

I asked her to check with the manager as I was on leave, but turns out that bastard was the one to ask her to reach out to me if I can work or not!!! Like WTF! What's the point of my medical documents and prescriptions that I have shared when applying for sick leave? What the fuck does bedrest mean that's mentioned on the prescription?

I called him and confirmed, and yes it was him to recommend my colleague to check if I can work or not.

I don't even know who my HR is as Cognizant in all their glorious wisdom doesn't give out this information directly. So I don't know where I complain about this type of stupidity?

So guys what should I be doing? I have told him as well that I cannot work, and yet this is being forced on me.

If you're getting used to it, it's great. But don't ask anyone else to bear the same pain.

Always remember, you’re earning to build your and your family’s health up not deteriorate it.

If your request for sick leaves when you’re actually sick are being denied or you’re asked to work even on SL, it’s high time you hop on a different company.

As for now, ask your manager politely but directly to arrange anyone else as you most certainly won’t be able to work and if forced upon, your health issue will hamper your work quality and output.

Don't pick up the call when on leave, this is something Indians need to learn.

In service firms you’re basically expected to sacrifice your life. I took calls on sick days, weekends, everything. The one day I said ‘no’, my manager slapped me with a final warning for ‘attitude’. Boundaries don’t exist here.

Forward any calls from your manager or team to your mom on sick leave. They will handle it and be your manager for the day 😉

Don't think too much tell straight that not well and cannot work. And remember sick leave don't require approval.

I guess brother u r taking too much of stress , u have applied for leave na then put your phone on silent mode and pick only 1 hour before u r again joining your shift after leaves simple, not even colleagues call say that i am hospitalised and my phone was out of my reach.

They can't force it on you unless you receive a formal mail asking you to cancel your leave. They can just "request" you at this point, and you can simply deny. Still, if you decide to even login then make sure to cancel your leave for the day. Employee shouldn't suffer because of poor managerial choices.

My manager simply brushed my question under the rug when I asked him to send me an email asking to work. I didn't get the mail, so I didn't work. Even though I wasn't going to work in the first place, I need assistance in reporting this behaviour as it's seriously crossing all the boundaries.

Don't entertain such requests, have your stand, there is no reward for being nice in corporate. Be brave and establish proper boundaries for these things with your manager.

Considering how bad the work environment is, the day is near where I'd have to ask for leave for my own funeral lol!

You need to change your attitude, never beg for leave, specially sick leave.

You just have to inform that you are not available.

The team leaders of the project I'm in, send out compliance issue mails if we don't inform them in advance or seek approvals. Despite me telling them about my sickness, it was marked as Unplanned Leave.
