Motivation to earn more after hitting a certain milestone

Why do people work past a point (financially)? My friend has hundreds of crores and still works hard and makes compromises for work. Me, on the other hand, as a 25-year-old employee, aims to save up somewhere between 10-20 crore and retire immediately. Having 20 crore and getting even a 7% return would be more than enough to live in any city, travel, and do most of the sane things you want to.

So, what motivates people to work beyond such a corpus? Why not just enjoy your life?

It's the fear of losing the status they already gained.. again you are aiming for 20cr. For others, even 1 crore might work.

I don’t think so , most successful people have a strong sense of purpose that’s why they continue working , lazing around forever is actually pretty boring if u think about it , and it’s usually such purpose driven people who love working that end up being uber successful that u think why is he/she still working?

An idle mind is a devil's workshop. You can only enjoy things upto a certain point. But after that it gets boring AF. And you'll start craving for something spicy. Typical human nature. For some, its about helping others reach their financial goals like they did and to grow their network irrespective of their financial status.

Who says he is not enjoying life. For a lot of people work is fun. They enjoy that mild chaos, that streak of closing deals, the kick of finishing a project. And yes then it's money plus status.

Ironically after 5-6 years of excruciating pain running a startup, getting close to end of runway, staff payment, product not getting users, etc. I was like after I sell this i wont ever do this again. And within 6 months of selling I fell into a deep depression. I didnt have to work for money, my expenses are low so I could sustain in whatever I made and my investments but the problem was I ran out of a "purpose". Now I am an entrepreneur and been a professional CEO both not for the money but just the kick of finding PMF, getting a good customer review, firefighting a problem, etc. So even if I make a great exit and earn 100 crores (which I know I will eventually) I would still do something to keep myself sane and get kicks.

Aiming for 20 crores by just working in faang India is very difficult after you have kids. Your expenses will skyrocket

PeppyNoodle

That's true. But not having kids is also becoming a popular opinion for the same reason.

Not having kids and retiring early leaves a man to live without any purpose.

I guess the definition of enjoying life is different for everyone. If someone is working not to earn, they have different reasons like working for their identity, their legacy, a quest to prove themselves, the challenge, the problem they are solving or maybe they just love to tackle complex things because thats what brings them enjoyment.

I personally know a person who had close to 100 crores in 1990s. His grandfather was the Ambani and Adani of one of a princely state before independence. They had every service in that princely state . Distillery movie distribution tea plantations water supply power generation power distribution transport travels etc etc . Second generation worked hard like their father and ensured they increased their wealth . The person whom i knew inherited large amount of money from his father and spend on heroines movie production drinking gambling etc . His kids today only have a 3 star hotel and a marriage hall in possession. The reason you need to work hard is once you have money and time you will start indulging in things which you even do not know when you are earning . Lots of unwanted elements will become your friends and squander your money . One of this persons cousin a Multi crore guy commited suicide due to financial troubles as they had enjoyed too much
