Most job description: "Must have 5+ years in X, Y, Z…"

Translation:

  • We want someone who's already done this exact job with a different logo on your LinkedIn
  • We don't want to train you, we just want to steal you
  • We're not hiring for potential. We’re hiring for muscle memory
  • We need a plug-and-play employee, not a human with ideas

sure you can find any format of justification.. But the way I see it - You're obsessed with the past, but you expect a different future. You want a candidate who’s already lived your company’s next 5 years somewhere else - so you don’t have to figure it out yourself. You don't want potential. You want a cheat code. A shortcut. A walking, talking, pre-tested answer key. And yet, when they show up and do exactly what you asked for - you're disappointed they didn't "bring anything new to the table"

NICE!

Well said. Most companies do not invest in their employees core learnings, and would rather hire someone who can do a particular things than empower the employee to do it later. (Also probably explains why the hire and fire culture has become so frequent)

I had the leadership say

‘ChatGPT. Do 12hrs worth work in 2.’

Yeah right, the business booms but where do I learn? I just go home having learnt how to copy paste.
