MNC to Startup Change

I made my first switch from a big MNC to a startup, and I’m already feeling the fast-paced culture. Any tips or things to keep in mind while working in a startup ( I'm a Java Developer)

Keep a check of your mental sanity. I work in one. The feeling to ship fast and owning stuff is very good in the beginning. But before you know you are consumed by it and start getting burnt out. Don’t get to that stage.

Rest. Enjoy. Hustle. Learn. Grow.

Be it MNC or a startup , both are same these days….everyone wants to maximise their own profits at the cost of employee’s mental health. Gone are the days when being a software engineer was a badge of honour….

PS: my first job was in 2004 as a software engineer in a Korean mnc based in Bangalore. Those were some golden days!

Hmm dont get too excited and start working too fast. Good work is rewarded with more work. No matter how crazy good you do, during annual review they will f. You .

You will work as a complete full stack now. UI, UX, backend, Devops, optimization, deployment everything. Most probably you have to oepn and close the office as well. And many more

Yeah 😂 tipping the water can in the dispenser and carrying it too if it's kept far away.

Yes, be careful, rest, etc etc. However, few benefits of working in a startup

  1. You learn more than just coding. You'll be owning a module or maybe the entire stack. Which is not possible in an mnc.
  2. You learn business as well.
  3. You get a voice.
  4. Might find purpose.

My advice, learn as much as possible (without burning out). Founders are like managers. They aren't God. So speak up when you see something going wrong.
You'll recognize fast whether the culture is toxic or good. If the founders are running it like an mnc, then it's worse than an mnc.

Instead of complaining about the fast pace, you can enjoy it. Decisions dont take forever, no approval cycles, you own your stuff.

If its a b2c startup (even b2b for that matter) , you'll get exposed to real user feedback. In an mnc it's like coding for a black hole.

I once worked in a project, in an mnc, (it was in red) for a client, slogged it out, burnt the midnight oil. Later i found out, the app we were so slogging for, nobody uses it. That doesn't happen in a startup.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, thanks for your reply. I can relate and already sense that I'm in a good cultured space now. Now I have a voice which was not the case in MNC and now it feels much more fulfilling !!

There is a lot of hacky code written sometimes. Try not to get into doing that or learning that. If your learning stops then I don’t see a reason to stay in startup unless it’s going IPO in next 1-2 year or they do frequent esops buyback

Would you care to explain why it's a good idea to stay if its going IPO ?

Don't believe that your ESOP will be worth millions some day. Even if it happens, founders will find a way to make sure you don't get much value , check how flipkart and other founders did it during their exit. Many such examples, particularly from India.

Yeah not expecting much from ESOPS, got a base which matches my expectations !!

Real men work in MNC and pbc. Startups are cheap and low standard in india.

I don't agree with this.there are a lot of teams in MNC and some teams are with really old tech, no growth, and no opportunities. I have seen people who have really nice teams, and good growth opportunities but it's not the case for everyone in MNC. Also I don't agree with your analogy because my experience is very different... Got into product based Startup with a really good hike which is not given in a MNC at my stage

Set your own pace and maintain that. Don’t try to ship things fast just by burning yourself.

Keep check of your health, sleep. Do not think that trading off health for more productivity will reward you. The only reward you will get is more medical bills
