Looks matter for social validation
Instagram pics should get likes. My partner should be a 'fit' in my friends group and extended family even if they fight on petty issues. Ever heard people saying 'Don't know what they liked in each other'
One of the worst thing a person can do to themselves is chose their partners purely based on looks.
Value systems, thought process, empathy are be the ones to be looked out for. Looks aaj hai, kal nahi.

Relationships have always been performative because we live in a social structure. One has to think about their reputation and place in society. No one wants to marry reputation destroyers because it affects personal livelihood afterwards.
I don't think it should be labelled as always it was like that, I have see lot of random uncles being married to better looking counterparts just because of some factors ( money, postion etc), now people scrutinize more.
The post doesn't talk about looks. But almost all, except @Bhidu , have assumed it only to be looks.
It's one of the reason for higher divorce rate. You are luck if all goes well and you find the compatibility. Otherwise it's a roller coaster ride. Happy Journey
