LIC Office Visit: A Masterclass in Inefficiency
Had the misfortune of visiting an LIC office today to pay my dad’s premium since their online payment system is a disaster. Thought it would be a simple transaction—go in, pay, get out. Oh, how wrong I was.
First impression? A sea of people, all in their late 40s, moving at the speed of a snail on sedatives. Zero enthusiasm, zero urgency, and an absolute disdain for the concept of customer service. Ask a question? Get a half-hearted grunt or an eye roll. Need help? Prepare to be redirected to at least five different people before you get an answer.
Finally, I get to the payment counter. The amount due: ₹23,716. I hand over ₹23,800. The guy takes my money, looks at me, and says, “Wait for change.” Mind you, his drawer is literally overflowing with notes and coins. But no, he must wait for someone else to magically bring him ₹80 in change. So, I stand there awkwardly while he stares into the abyss, pretending to be busy.
Meanwhile, the office is packed with so many employees doing so little. Easily 100 people in there, accomplishing what 10 efficient workers in a private company could handle effortlessly. The sheer waste of taxpayer money is mind-numbing.
Moral of the story? If you ever have the option to avoid an LIC office, take it. Or be prepared for the slowest, most soul-sucking experience of your life.

i understand this pain. I was one of the many who curse the government office, untill i had to deal with claims.
Dealing with so called technology enabled and customer friendly pvt companies, regarding claims, made me see these inefficient government as heaven.

Very surprised to hear this! Could you elaborate on your experience?

Fyi you can’t pay your father premium with your account the payment should originate from policy holders account

Not necessarily. I have been paying it via other person account and everytime it gets credited successfully without any sort of deductions.

Not important. I m paying my father's premium and my family's from my acc only. I don't think so that's an issue

Why you don't pay online???? It's easy and you will get alert every year ...And yes you true in saying they are lazy and have low motivation as they don't have any risk of loosing job.

The portal wasn’t working throwing some error and hence….

You can pay premiums using other platforms like PayTM, Phonepay, Amazon Pay... I have been using Amazon Pay since last few years to pay for my and my spouse's policies. Have used PayTM too few years back

I can understand what a pain it is. I feel the same way when I visit my SBI Branch. They are so lazy even if you throw them money they won't move an inch

You can pay using any UPI app. No need to visit. all you need is the policy number

I envy their WLB :) why hustle everyone for delivering milk and eggs in 10 mins.

That was their masterclass for you for not to choose LIC

Oh god. Such a similar situation I had encountered and true their online system is indeed a disaster.

And the worst part after waiting for 10 mins I left without collecting the change and the man pocketed it. He was a govt employee why do they do this ? Was taking to my mom she was telling me this happens in most offices, people add friction in getting change so that you leave the change and leave

I had my home loan originated from LiC HFL. I decided to move to a private operator. What a hassle it was. So much delays in getting the most basic documents. It took some time but eventually we transitioned. What a relief it was.
