Let's be real, this isn't the first time.
The fact is, nobody uses something just because it’s "made in India." When it comes to social media, public familiarity matters so much that even if functionality and security are compromised, people will still stick to the same app simply because everyone else is using it (I'm looking at you apple 👀).
Even if that weren’t the case, why would anyone switch from something they’re already familiar with to something that offers no major improvements, just because it’s "made in India"? That’s just extra work; rate of adoption is a huge challenge in this case.
It's one of the reasons people in the US and canada prefer using IOS, because everyone else has one, and using ios messaging apps is much easier, than switching over to a third party app like whatsapp. Even if that means using an older device.
I have nothing against arratai. I loved hike, and I truly wish they bought it back, it was way ahead of it's time. But right now, I just don't see myself or anyone I know switching or sticking to arratai.
The only way this happens, is if ofcourse there is ban on all foreign social media apps like in China. Or if zuck decides to introduce fees for the app, which I don't mind paying for, but would obviously then lead many others including people I know to drop off and turn to free alternatives.
That all being said, I'd rather trust a private foreign company like meta with my data than the government.
These are just my thoughts.

"nobody uses something just because it's made in india"
False, if I have to purchase something, I always prefer RuPay/UPI over visa/MasterCard/amex, and will continue to do so.
Better things can be made, right here.
About familiarity, we could just clone the UX. China does it. Whatsapp has been stealing UX from telegram for years now. Why don't we do the same.
The para about ios and apple is relevant here why
The rate of adoption will skyrocket once they ban whatsapp which i think they will because the govt asked zucc to surrender E2E, but zucc didn't comply.
Do you think there is zero possibility that the CIA has access to users' whatsapp messages? I personally don't think so.
So you'd rather have your information accessible to the CIA which then can be used to overthrow the government in india or cause riots or worse, wars?

Exactly. And if Arattai is a bad product, or not competent enough to overthrow Whatsapp, what really is the motivation behind these posts. I personally didn't care about it but when I saw usual Leftists go all personal over the Zoho CEO, I really think we should adopt it. Somethings give off smoke before the fire comes out in the open. There is reason to belive the US will get all rabid in the coming mo the and the only weapon outside of tariffs is sanctions, tech outages, and regime changes via funded 'protests'.
How is this ragebait when you two are the only ones that care about a dumb opinion like this? C'mon man lmfao
Your first example doesn't make sense. I don't know anyone that uses those things because it's "made in india", but rather because they just work so much better than other alternatives.
I'm sure you had a blast typing this on your micromax which was "made in india".

The last line undoes everything. Private foreign company = foreign government. Truth is data is not safe anywhere. But the argument for local companies is because you never know in current global political scenario what some bully Govts will use to get an edge. Google maps were disabled for Russians when the Ukraine War started. What did Google have to do with it? Plus sanctions or so earlier meant for terrorist nations only, are being threatened by US against those nations that are neutral like us for simply not toeing their line. All in all, give it a try. Keep both apps but support local when you can. Give them feedback if they suck. If they improve, good. Else leave it. Everybody started using Telegram when Whatsapp was taken by Zuck. People feel strongly about data even when it's private foreign company. Telegram improved tremendously, if you know.
I agree with data not being safe anywhere, and if it ever comes down to it, any govt can always push these companies to extract user data for the wrong reasons. However the onus then falls on the conscience on the ceos of these companies, and whether they actually do care about their users, take for instance what happened during the US Congress vs social media company hearings from last year.
everyone should feel strongly about data, it is your private property. And I believe that apps and founders of these apps should start being more transparent about this, and take it alot more seriously. Like you mentioned with telegram, which is one of its huge selling points, however, it's still not as widely adopted in many circles.
It arratai manages to capture the privacy aspect, ensuring that it's not going to be selling user data to the govt under this "make in India" scheme, I'd probably be more inclined to want to use it.
