Legality of the betting apps
Can anyone explain to me how betting apps like 1xbet are working in India.
You can easily download them from the app/play store.
Is there a loop hole there? Last I knew betting is illegal in India and is a criminal offence.
Also any tips on IPL are welcome 😅

Betting isn't illegal as long as they can prove that there is some element of skill / thought that is required while placing the bet. Hence, these apps will incorporate some complexity or something to make it a game of skill instead of pure chance

The workaround amazes me

I think it's not betting, it's more of a jackpot. In betting, a common pool money is created and multiples of that amount is given to winner bit in dream11 or other apps ask for an entrance fee for a match and the winner gets a fixed amount as prize (just as jackpot).

They found a loophole in the system.

I don't think you can download 1xBet from the Play Store.
Apps like Dream 11 ( which involve an element of skill) are legal. Apps like 1xBet ( which are pureplay betting) are illegal. Google only allows the former on the Play Store for obvious reasons.

Gotcha. You can download it from their website.

People get confused because the law in India talks about physical betting and gambling, not online platforms, so apps that operate from abroad just slide into that grey area and keep running even though technically betting isn’t legal here. I’ve seen a lot of people discussing https://aviatorgame.org.in/ because it’s basically a full casino site with the whole setup — crash games, live tables, slots, quick rounds etc., not just cricket betting — and since the servers are outside India it doesn’t fall directly under local restrictions. The whole online casino scene grew because of that loophole, so even during IPL people switch between sportsbook odds and casino games when the match slows down or during innings break, especially the ones who prefer fast rounds where results show in a few seconds. Whether it’s good or bad depends on how you look at it, but that’s the reason these apps keep working without getting banned.
